Episode 13
This is the third of a four part series with Rick Kelly. Today we carry on the conversation related to Parenting the Restorative Way. Rick speaks about the key role of relationships is to be intentional and learn about a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset and why focusing on accomplishments rather than effort is not helpful in the bigger picture.
Some youth are challenged with transitional points in their development i.e. graduating high school where they may have been able to achieve many things but lack a sense of ability about how they could do what they did. Unfortunately this lagging can become a crisis situation for the individual as well as the family as it can happen very quickly.
**I mention in the podcast Dr. Gordon Neufeld and his lecture about how scientific research on adolescent brain research is done in North America versus Europe and said I would post something. I found my notes from 2012! Dr. Neufeld notes that Canadian/U.S. research is about what is “normal” and how everyone else not in that category as exceptional or abnormal (behaviourial statistical approach). In the developmental approach or process (or lens) we are looking at what could be…What is the 14 year old capable of if their human potential is realized; we are concerned about potential, not “normal”. This is the teaching I spoke about when Rick Kelly introduced Growth Mindset. –Julie
