Episode 14
In this last episode in the four part series ‘Parenting the Restorative Way’ with Rick Kelly he and I talk about how parents and caregivers can be challenged to communicate with professionals involved with their child. Rick explains how he maps out all the responsibilities parents have and how parents are their child’s village (in relation to ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’) and how parents are managing multiple roles at one time. Recognizing and learning how to be your child’s best advocate while interacting in settings where professionals see themselves as experts can be intimidating, frustrating and negatively impactful. But, blending what only you know as your child’s parent/caregiver together with the professional’s skills can create a relational engagement in expressing your voice, identifying your child’s true needs and feeling supported. It is important for parent’s/caregivers to know they have a critical voice in their child’s life and this does not stack up to professional roles. Don’t under-acknowledge your role as a parent/caregiver in your child’s life.
